How to pack a board
A well-packed board arrives in the same shape it left. Allow about 30 minutes.
What you'll need
- Bubble wrap (a decent roll)
- Flattened cardboard boxes. Ask your local surf shop, they often have board boxes to give away
- Pipe insulation or pool noodles for the rails (optional but great)
- Strong packing tape and a marker
Steps
- Take the fins out and wrap them separately with the fin key and screws. Tape the bag to the deck so they don't get lost.
- Strip the wax or put a sheet of paper over it so the bubble wrap doesn't stick.
- Protect the nose and tail with folded cardboard or a cut-off box corner, taped down.
- Pad the rails with pipe insulation or an extra strip of bubble wrap. Rails take most knocks in transit.
- Wrap the whole board in two or three layers of bubble wrap.
- Sandwich it in cardboard on the deck and bottom, then tape it all the way round every 30cm or so.
- Label it "FRAGILE: SURFBOARD" on both sides, and add the address label on the deck side.
- Measure the packed size (length, width and depth) before you book a courier. Couriers price by size as well as weight.
Which courier?
Boards up to about 6'6" can usually go with standard couriers as an oversize parcel. Mid-lengths and longboards often need a freight service or a specialist board courier. Get a quote before you set your shipping price.
